Ryer
Academy welcomes Mr. Bobby Palumbi, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown
Belt, as a new member of our Steel City affiliated
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program.
Bobby Palumbi began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
in 2001 under a Relson Gracie academy in Southern New Jersey. He
received his Blue Belt from Saulo Ribeiro in 2002 and moved to
Philadelphia while attending Saint Joseph’s University. At that
time, he began training under Relson Gracie Black Belt Phil Migliarese.
He received his Purple Belt from Phil Migliarese in 2004 and his Brown
Belt in 2006.
Bobby began teaching Jiu-Jitsu in 2002 and from
2001 until 2006 he competed in numerous tournaments. One of these
tournaments was the Grappler’s Quest Nationals which he won in 2005 and
finished second in 2006. He has also competed in the Mundial
tournament in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in 2003. In the fall of
2006, Bobby moved to Pittsburgh to attend law school at Duquesne
University. He briefly taught Jiu-Jitsu in Pittsburgh before
taking a hiatus to focus on school. Bobby is now a practicing
attorney in downtown Pittsburgh.
While focusing on his legal career, Bobby began training under Sensei
Sonny Achille, a Pedro Sauer Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, at
Steel City Martial Arts.
Bobby
is very excited to be teaching Jiu-Jitsu at Ryer Martial Arts Academy.
His teaching style is focused on developing basic techniques and then
building upon those basics. He focuses on the small
details that incorporate leverage and technique into each movement.
This makes it very easy for new students to begin taking class
and learn at their own pace.
Once again, we welcome Bobby to the teaching staff!

The following article is the
original version of "Asperger's and Martial Arts", written by Mr.
David Katz for the Winter 2012
ABOARD'S Autism Connection of PA newsletter. Mr. Katz is
a current member of Ryer Academy's Adult Counterpoint Tactical System
Program and trains privately under Mr. Joel Daugherty. He was
diagnosed with Asperger's in 2011. He is employed full-time as a
web designer and has earned both a Ph.D. in Art History and a Masters
Degree in Web Development.
Enjoy the read...
I am going to make some
observations about some people with Aspergers. It doesn't pertain
to all people with Aspergers, because it turns out that there are a wide
variety of types. In fact, there is even a saying: "When you have met
one Aspie, you've met one person with Aspergers."
In other words, the kind of
High Functioning Autism that is Aspergers takes many forms.
Still, one can safely say that
many Aspies struggle with physical coordination. They may even have a
poor internal representation of their body in space. As the academic
scholar and fellow Aspie Caitlin Freeman points out, medical research
has discovered that the part of the brain that processes balance and
spatial awareness -- the cerebellum -- can tend to develop differently
in individuals who are on the spectrum. Hence the characteristic "Aspie
clumsiness".
Without coordination, there may
be little chance of successful social interaction via athletic
activities; and without a good grasp of one's spatial orientation, there
is even the risk of missing the chair when sitting down to a social
lunch (I know. I've done that.) In school, the perception of one as
physically inept can also lead to bullying.
So there's a whole component of
"confidence" that can go un-nurtured since it derives from a comfort
with one's physical ability.
The good news is that even though
Aspies may not develop along the same lines as normal folks, they can
still find their own path.
But consider the obstacles to
overcoming this problem:
First,
many Aspies do not like to be touched by others (or touch others).
Second,
social communication and interaction is difficult.
Third,
there cannot be too much sensory distraction.
Fourth,
and most important, Aspies need to be able to proceed at their own pace.
Now, it might occur to some
readers, just as it occurred to me, that lessons in something structured
like ballroom dancing would be perfect for teaching coordination. For
many Aspies that is just wrong! Why is this such a bad idea? Well, look
at the obstacles: Dance partners have to touch and there has to be
social communication in order to organize their motion. Further, more
than one couple is on the floor at one time, which leads to an overload
of sensory distraction. And lastly, the person with Aspergers may
inevitably feel that he or she is holding the others back -- he or she
may simply wind up reliving their past frustration with coordination.
Still, ballroom dance is on the
right track, because if there is one thing Aspies are good at, it is
routine (If you've ever wondered how it is that so many Aspies can love
computer coding, this is a big part of it). Aspies can really excel at
following rules and repetition.
Well, what about Martial Arts?
Isn't Martial Arts a structured set of repeated routines? Not only is
that true from an Aspie perspective, but it is also true that by
learning how to move through these routines, one improves coordination
as well as fosters a greater sense of one's body in space.
Add to this the fact that, in
contrast to ballroom dancing, the martial arts are more about gaining
independence from an embrace.
Indeed, the study of the Martial
Arts is, Caitlin Freeman writes, an excellent discipline for cultivating
in a calm and organized setting the areas of the brain responsible for
movement and balance. Her own training was "the first time I realized
that I was more than just a brain being schlepped around by a disjointed
collection of body parts."
So, why Ryer Martial Arts Academy
in particular? Two reasons: private lessons and very sympathetic
instructors. Those are two very big arguments in its favor. Unlike many
studios, many that refuse to offer private instruction, Ryer's provides
one-on-one teaching, and at affordable prices. At Ryer the socially shy
Aspie can proceed without embarrassment at his or her own pace --
however simple or slow the teaching is at the start. And since the
classes are private, they bypass any sensory distraction from other
students. Further, the instructors, such as Joel Daugherty, are in tune
with the fact that many Aspies are visual thinkers (and of course it
helps that Joel is an artist himself). Teachers at Ryer, like Joel,
pepper their lessons with visual metaphors that enable the Aspie to more
easily grasp a picture of what is being taught.
And wouldn't it be really awesome
for young Aspies who were already pursuing social skills training, if
they paired that with the physical accomplishment that can be attained
at Ryer Martial Arts Academy? Just think how much more likely it would
be that they would achieve a successful career and well-rounded social
life.
Congratulations to David on such a well written and
informative article!

directly with CTS Founder and Master Zach Whitson.
In addition to the training, Belt Examinations were held and
several Ryer Academy members were promoted to their next rank,
including; Jamie Dillon to 3rd Class Brown Belt, Jenna Pattison

The

Whitson teaching an Advanced Counterpoint Tactical System

translates to stick and dagger and has been said to be like the
"calculus of martial arts". Level Two is a requirement for
Second Degree Black Belt in CTS.
The camp continued on Saturday with a two part seminar day
covering Cacoy Doce Pares Level Three. Master
Whitson introduced a new set of double stick drills as well as a

The
vision of Ryer Martial Arts Academy has continued to evolve.
In the beginning we were about creating this renowned academy, a
magnificent facility, and endless programs. We have done
this for the most part, however, we realize this vision is
somewhat flawed and maybe shortsighted. It's not about the
entire academy. It's not about the facility. It's
about each person's experience and focusing our attention and
effort on making each of these individuals successful in their
own way; in their own experience.
To do this we needed a team and what a team we have! There
are not enough words to explain the appreciation we have for our
team members. With that in mind, we thought it was time to
recognize one person each year that has taken on a greater
responsibility, someone who has truly embodied the new vision of
Ryer Academy. For 2011 we recognize Mr. Richard Meagher
for his contributions and continued dedication to the vision and
mission of Ryer Martial Arts Academy.
Congratulations Rich from all of us at Ryer Academy and, more
importantly, thank you!
Ryer
Academy students and instructors traveled to Dayton, Ohio over
the weekend to support the 2nd Annual Combat Training Camp
hosted by Mr. Kevin Lee Wagner and his club,
Dayton Combative
Arts.
This camp features the instruction of Master Zach Whitson,
the Founder of the
Counterpoint Tactical System. Master Whitson taught a
two part seminar on Saturday covering Pangamot Level One and
Kenpo Counterpoint Level One. Then on Sunday we trained outdoors
and worked through Lihok Ni Cacoy Level Two.
This year's camp was a super success! Thanks and
congratulations to Kevin and his group for the opportunity to
train and the hospitality. Secondly, thanks to Master
Whitson for the incredible instruction. Finally, thanks to
all the Ryer Academy students who dedicated their time to travel
and train. It was a great experience for everyone!

Pat Messner was promoted to the rank of Blue Belt yesterday by
Sensei Sonny Achille of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu - Pedro Sauer
Team.
With this promotion, Pat is the first student of Ryer
Martial Arts Academy's Adult
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program to earn the rank of Blue Belt
since the program's inception in April 2009. Pat has
proven to be a leader in the Academy not only with his technical
skill, but also with his attitude and approach to training.
All of us at Ryer Academy are proud of his accomplishment.
Congratulations to Pat and the other Steel City Martial Arts
students that received promotions!

Ryer Academy's very own Richard Meagher returned to the Muhammad
Ali Training Camp over the weekend and was promoted to Nidan,
the rank of Second Degree Black Belt, in Kyusho-Jitsu.
Each year martial artists from all over the world, including;
Austria, Canada, England, Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland
gather at the former Muhammad Ali Training Camp in Deer Lake,
Pennsylvania to train hard and share ideas. The primary
focus is on Pressure Points, but teachers at the camp also
taught Small Circle Jiu-Jitsu, Modern Arnis, American Kenpo
Karate, and Krav Maga.
On Saturday evening several of the participants were promoted to
their next belt rank. Mr. Rich Meagher was promoted to the
rank of Nidan and he was presented his certificate by none other
than Grandmaster George Dillman.
Congratulations to Mr. Rich on his latest accomplishment!
Ryer
Academy instructors and students held a mini martial arts class
for forty children as part of Sacred Heart Elementary
School's Family Fitness Day.
Each year Sacred Heart Elementary School holds this special,
four hour event to promote health and fitness among children of
all ages. They have workshops for not only martial arts,
but for basketball, aerobics, and more! It's a great event
for the entire family to take part in and be active together.

Joshua Ryer Receives
The "System Patch" From Grandmaster Planas
November 15th,
2010
On
November 13th in Mentor, Ohio; Mr.
Joshua Ryer and Mr. Joe Doyle were awarded the "System
Patch" from Grandmaster Richard "Huk"
Planas. The "System Patch" is considered by many as one of the
highest decorations in the art of
American Kenpo Karate.
Designed in the early 1970’s, Grandmaster Planas handed out a
similar patch to students in his lineage. At this point in
time,
it was considered a "Lineage Patch". After several years
the meaning and conferment of the patch changed to the ”System
Patch”.
Individuals that have earned the patch have attained the status
level of "First Generation Student" under Grandmaster Planas and
closely adheres to the teachings and requirements set forth in
the Parker/ Planas Lineage of American Kenpo Karate. According to Grandmaster
Planas, less than thirty individuals have been awarded the
"System Patch".

training such as single and double stick. Ten students from four to
twelve years of age demonstrated their new skill sets and were
promoted. Congratulations!
In

accounts for the First Class Brown Belt requirements in CTS.
Then
the seminars continued with the annual Doce Pares seminar on
Saturday and a Counterpoint Tactical System seminar on Sunday.

Ryer
Martial Arts Academy held their bi-monthly
Women's Only Self-Defense
Workshop the weekend before Christmas and it was very well
attended. Over a dozen ladies took a break from the hectic,
shopping weekend to give themselves an invaluable gift, the gift of
self-defense! Ryer Academy's Senior Instructor Joshua Ryer led
the women through basic self-defense techniques for common attacks
as well as discussing the importance of being aware.
The next Women's Only Self-Defense Workshop is set for Saturday,
February 20th from 2pm to 3pm. To pre-register, please

Over
the weekend, Kenpo Grandmaster Richard "Huk" Planas taught a seminar
at Joe Doyle's American Kenpo
Karate Academy in Mentor, Ohio which is just east of Cleveland.
Ryer Academy's Senior Instructor Joshua Ryer and Richard Meagher
attended the one day event along with many other guests from
Indiana, Ohio, and western Pennsylvania. Grandmaster Planas
covered the first half of Form Four as well as several self-defense
techniques from the Green Belt curriculum.
If you missed out on this weekend's seminar, don't worry!
Grandmaster Planas is scheduled to visit Pittsburgh in early 2010.
He will be conducting a one day seminar at Ryer Martial Arts Academy
on Saturday, January 23rd.

Ryer
Martial Arts Academy hosted it's first
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar
on Saturday, November 21st with Joshua Ryer's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
teacher, Sonny Achille. Sensei Sonny Achille is a Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Master Pedro Sauer and is the Head
Instructor at
Steel
City Martial Arts.
Sensei Achille started the seminar with a series of takedowns along
with follow-up submissions from the takedown position. He then
led students through a counter to the single-leg takedown as well as
working transitions from the closed and open guard positions to
numerous locks and chokes. Adversely, Sensei Achille taught
several methods of passing the closed and open guard positions.
He then finished his instruction with an awesome escape from half
guard into controlling the back position.
After the conclusion of the seminar, Sensei Achille took the time to
"roll" with several of the students that stuck around to workout.
It's safe to say that it was a humbling experience for all of the
students!
In addition, Sensei Achille awarded several Ryer Academy students
with their first stripes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Congratulations to Arif Sumer, Brandon Gaffey, Brendan Walk, Frank
Faust, Joel Daugherty, Patrick Messner, Preston Macready, Shawn
Dickson, and Steve Rowe!
In
conclusion, the seminar was a complete success! Sensei Sonny
Achille covered a tremendous amount of techniques that are certain
to improve everyone's understanding of the art. Ryer Academy
looks forward to his return!
Ryer Martial Arts Academy is an Affiliate Academy of

Master Whitson arrived on Thursday afternoon and later that same
evening conducted testing in both the
Counterpoint Tactical
System and
Doce Pares Eskrima.
Nine students from Ryer Academy successfully passed their
examinations and were promoted to their next belt level. They
include: Alex Ruck to Blue Belt in CTS; Alex Stanton to Blue Belt in
CTS; Anne Mundell to Blue Belt in CTS and Green Belt in Doce Pares;
Ben Boas to Blue Belt in CTS; Jaime Dillon to Blue Belt in CTS;
Jessica Levine to Green Belt in Doce Pares; Monica Williams to Green
Belt in Doce Pares; Preston Macready to Red Belt in CTS; and Sherri
Williams to Red Belt in CTS. Congratulations to each of you!
On Saturday Master Whitson began the group seminars by teaching
Panantukan Level Two from the CTS curriculum. Panantukan is an
empty-hand boxing component of
Filipino-based
martial arts. Master Whitson then switched gears in the
afternoon and taught Long Range Single and Double Stick Tactics.
On
Sunday we commenced the group seminars with new material that Master
Whitson is currently developing, Ground Fighting Level Two.
The Ground Fighting component of the
Counterpoint Tactical
System is more of a "ground and pound" mentality. If a CTS
practitioner would find themselves on the ground, they would be
looking to strike, nullify their opponent, and get to their feet as
quickly as possible. During the seminar Master Whitson drew
great comparisons between elements we do standing and elements we
can execute on the ground. This was an awesome seminar and
everyone looks forward to further exposure to this category of
training.
Altogether
it was an extremely successful weekend! Every opportunity to
train with Master Whitson is phenomenal and we hope that you can
join us next time!
Master Zach
Whitson is scheduled to return to Ryer Academy in mid to late
February. For more information on our future events, please

Whitson also teaching a two-part seminar. The first part of
Master Whitson's seminar covered a sampling of his new double stick
drills from the advanced levels of the
Counterpoint Tactical

off with an introduction into the newly developed Kenpo Counterpoint

United Parker's Kenpo Karate Is Now Ryer Martial Arts Academy
January 10th, 2008
In
September 2000, Josh Ryer officially established the United Parker's
Kenpo Karate Club at the University of Pittsburgh. The purpose
of the club was to establish an American Kenpo program in Pittsburgh
and share the benefits of this great martial art with others.
After tremendous
growth and an awesome opportunity, the university club moved into a
full-time location in February 2004. We continued to carry on
the UPK name and became even more dedicated to offer the very best
martial arts instruction.
Now in 2008, we are bigger and better than ever! Our school
has evolved to welcome all kinds of people with many martial
interests. Our instructors and our students have evolved to
become more well-rounded and physically fit. We have
established some of the best martial arts programs for individuals
of all age groups. We have developed an awesome fitness
program that is unmatched. Finally, we have diversified our
instruction into several other dynamic martial art disciplines.
With all of that,
our purpose has evolved! Our school is dedicated to offering
the same high quality instruction you have grown accustom to, yet we
are taking everything to a new level!
So with so much
change and excitement, we are now taking on a new name. Our
school is now officially the Ryer Martial Arts Academy and our new
crest is shown above. The diamond has always represented our
school. Our original crest was the shape of a diamond.
The diamond was used based off a saying from Senior Grandmaster Ed
Parker that Kenpo, "...was like a diamond in the rough waiting to be
cut and polished to bring forth its true luster and value."
Now the diamond represents the school in even more ways as we strive
to become more multi-faceted and deliver the highest quality martial
arts.

Renshu
February 2nd, 2007
Meaning “Practice
Time” or “Training Session”. In the orient, Martial Arts
training is taken very seriously, and there is a very strong
atmosphere of discipline and intensity during each class. The
goal or mindset of Renshu is to always improve and develop great
training habits. This allows you and your classmates to
maximize the benefits of your Martial Arts training.
Simple little
things often make a big difference in the long haul. For
example…early arrival and proper preparation for class allows you to
better focus your mind and eliminate any distractions, negative
thoughts or challenges of your day.
Getting the body in
motion, practicing your basics and a good warm up will have you
better prepared and ready for a great class. Learning to leave
problems of the day in your shoes is another good habit for your
training. Aiming and directing your thoughts and energies
toward your training goals is great stress release and will increase
each learning experience.
Renshu allows us to
anchor and condition great training habits and master our
fundamentals. Over time, this mindset prepares us for more
advanced skills. If you want to get more out of your martial
arts training, you must first learn to put more into it. More
effort, better focus, dynamic energy and greater intensity in your
practice sessions will allow you to reach for more of your true
potential.
Giving your best at
the dojo and developing great habits will help you become a better
Martial Artists and an even better Black Belt Champion in life.
Developing great
practice and study habits allows you to achieve straight A’s in and
out of the dojo.
